As De Montfort University in Leicester looks to cut their staff numbers by 80, 200 members of staff have been told there jobs are at risk. First time buyers get help from the government

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

First time buyers get help from the government to get them on the property ladder.

Chancellor George Osborne has announced a new scheme called ‘First Buy’ that is going to help first time buyers reach the 25 per cent deposit needed to enable them to get a mortgage. The scheme replaces Labour’s Homebuy Direct scheme, which was withdrawn last autumn.

The scheme will only be available to people who have a household income which amounts to less than £60,000 and for only new-build homes.
Both the Government and the housebuilder will each loan the buyer 10 per cent at a low rate of interest and then the buyers themselves will have to save the remaining 5 per cent.
The Government’s share of the money will come from a tax on banks.
